Classic ASP Programming and Development
With Microsoft pushing ASP.NET so vehemently, there is no doubt that classic ASP (active server pages) and related technology (like VB Script) are being pushed to the programming language graveyard.
The Classic ASP programming language is still used today in millions of web applications around the world, both public and within companies and corporations. For example, godaddy.com, which is one of the largest web and web hosting services companies around today is still using classic asp for a portion of their customer-facing website.
I have a number of successful web projects developed in classic asp, and don’t plan on converting them any time soon. They are stable, secure, and bug free, so why convert? Since I have the need to maintain and develop applications written in classic asp, primarily with vb script, I decided to compile a list of modern classic asp frameworks and libraries, and other tools and scripts that I’ve used.
The point is that classic ASP / ASP 3.0 is not a dead development language, and there are still many people programming in classic asp today.
I will also try to make the case for leaving a stable and working asp application alone, instead of converting it to PHP or ASP.NET. I have read over and over that there is no real benefit to converting an app for the sake of converting. It’s a waste of time and other resources, and as you will see in future installments of the article series, there are many factors that must go into calculating the ROI of a conversion.
