How We Met

January 10th, 2006  |  Published in wedding

In planning our wedding we got to talking about how we met. Here are two separate versions of the night we met. The short of it is that we met on January 25, 2002 at the Argyle Bar and Grill in downtown Halifax while on our respective “girls night out” and “guys night out” for the week. You can read below for each of our recollections of the night!

Jennifer’s Story – How We Met

On a snowy night January 25 2002, my friend Sinead convinced me to go to the Argyle for some dancing and fun. At the time Sinead wanted to meet a guy there and I needed to be the friend who joined her for support. After some hesitation and a promise to only stay for an hour (I was very tired and busy with school work), I decided to play designated driver and go out for a bit of fun.

We started off at the Party House (now the Pogue Fodoe), and then went to the Argyle. We were downstairs for about twenty minutes when I spotted a group of guys coming down the stairs and a very cute guy dressed in jeans and a light blue t-shirt. I pointed him out to Sinead. She told me to go talk to him and said that if I didn’t, I’d miss my chance. I was way too shy and decided that if we were meant to talk we would, but that there was no way I was approaching this guy especially in front of all of his friends – its just not me. Sinead soon met up with the guy she was interested in and I was left alone on the dance floor. I decided to send a smile over to the guy in the blue shirt. He smiled back and one of his friend’s whispered something to him (I later found out the wording went something like “Hey Gary, that girl over there is checking you out” – haha). Next thing I knew, I was being grabbed by some other guy on the dance floor and he wouldn’t let go of me. I must have had a look of “Help” written on my face because the cute guy in the blue shirt came down with his friend and saved me! He introduced himself and we danced for a few songs. We ended up sitting by the bar and talking for the rest of the night (there goes the plan of staying for an hour!). At the end of the night Gary asked me for my phone number but I decided to give him my email instead just to be safe. Sinead and I left the bar and drove home. When I got home at 3 a.m. there was already and email!:

“Hi, remember me? I can’t get you out of my head. Would you like to go for coffee or wings sometime soon? Talk to you later, Gary”.

We ended up going out for hot chocolate instead a week later at the Second Cup. After several months of msn conversations and casual meetings and movies, we ended up dating that summer. The rest is history.

Gary’s Story – How We Met

As usual, the boys did some partying at 1616 and were planning another night out on the town at the Argyle. We weren’t going to let some little snowstorm get in the way. It was Jerry, Simon, Chris, Colin, and I, and we were rarin’ to go.

We got to the Argyle and as usual, headed downstairs to hit the bar, and to scope out some fly hunnies on the dance floor. Being a sucker for blond girls, I immediately noticed Jennifer dancing with her friend, and of course, immediately pointed her out to the guys.

In the meanwhile, Colin was so drunk that he went down on the dance floor to try his luck by himself. I guess from his point of view, he noticed Jenn giving me the eye. (Little did he know that I’d already bee “on that” for at least 15 minutes by that time.)

At this point I was debating with the guys what my chances were if I was to head down there and dance. After a complex analysis, another drink or two, and the the fact that some hideous bar lizzard was trying to hit on her, it was decided that I should head down there. If anything, my friends said, it was just so that she would have an “out” if that other guy was not to her liking. (Our complex analysis revealed that this would be the case.) To me, however, it was not as simple as just giving her an option not to have to dance with some loser. My motives were deeper than that and entailed getting her to come sit down with me. If I stopped some loser from bothering her and making a fool of himself in the process, then thats all the better.

My plan worked, and she came and sat with me for an hour. In fact, I spent so much time with her that night, my friends left and went somewhere else on their own. We chatted for quite a while, but I guess I wasn’t cool enough for her to give me her number. All I got was an email address, and whats more, I had to remember it for the hour it was going to take me to get back to Park Victoria. (Anyone who knows me, and how “good” my memory is for stuff like this is, knows how difficult this task was for me.)

I did remember her email address, but I must have forgot that in order no to seem desperate, I should wait at least one full day before emailing her. As soon as I got home, I went to the box and shot off a quick, drunken email.

“Hi, remember me? I can’t get you out of my head. Would you like to go for coffee or wings sometime soon? Talk to you later, Gary”.

I guess I was expecting her memory to be as bad as mine. LOL.

We ended up going out to Second Cup on Spring Garden Road (A place that neither of us like, or have ever gone since. In fact, I’d never gone there before, and didn’t drink coffee.) It seems that we’d hit it off, and the rest is as they say; history.

The Pirates Cave Varadero Cuba

November 8th, 2005  |  Published in travel

The Pirates Cave is a bar in an actual cave!! – Yes, that’s right.

The Pirates Cave – Varadero Cuba

The bar is worth your while to travel off your resort and take in the real Cuban culture! Located walking distance from Bahia Principe, Brisas del Caribe, and Coralia Playa de Oro, the bar charges 10 convertible pesos (approx 10 dollars American) for cover and then you drink all you want for free. Ask your resort for information on howntomgethtere or take a taxi. Inside, you can smell in real smell of the cave (being underground), take in a show (magic show and dancing show), and then dance the night away with tourists and local Cubans who know how to meringue and salsa!

It’s am unforgettable experience of Varadero Cuba – an unmissed experience!

Grand Palladium Bavaro all inclusive vacation. Enjoy the pictures, photos, and reviews and Video of our All Inclusive Grand Palladium Bavaro vacation. Our Grand Palladium Bavaro Photos, Video, Review, from our Dominican Republic vacation. We stayed in Punta Cana, and the vacation was simply amazing! Click the links below for the corresponding pictures and review. The country was great and more modern than I thought. They even had some digital signage in a few of the restaurants; impressive! We are even going to go back for our wedding to the gran bahia principe bavaro. Click the links below to navigate. Enjoy! Also find some Caribbean travel tips.

Grand Palladium Bavaro Resort Review

  • We stayed at this fabulous resort from April 25th to May 9th. (We are a couple in our mid twenties)
We booked through Amigo Travel (in Elmsdale) with Crystal, and her service and commitment to ensure we had a good stay was very appreciated. We will continue to book with this company as they offer great prices as well.
  • Flight- we flew Air Transat. Good flight. Arrived on time. The airport is like nothing we’ve ever seen. It was like a huge tiki hut! Very nice!
  • Arrival- Our bus ride was about half hour long. We arrived around 1 p.m. and check in was smooth and fast. We were taken to our room and were shocked to find that we had been upgraded free if charge to a suite!! very nice surprise indeed. Not sure if this was a random upgrade, if they thought we were on our honeymoon, or if this was something that Amigo travel requested for us that we were not
    aware of.
  • Room- This room was as nice or nicer than any hotel room you can stay at in Canada. This resort underwent multi-million dollar renovations and the room was gorgeous and immaculate. The floors were a shiny marble, there were beautiful dark wooden closets, a vanity, king size bed, living room area, stocked mini bar, iron and ironing board, and HUGE bathroom with two-person Jacuzzi, double sink, and glass shower and toilet.
  • Grounds- This resort is very well maintained. There are gardeners constantly making sure that walkways are clean and the plants and flowers are watered. Everything is green and lush (unlike what you see in Cuba – where the grass is often dry and brown). There are huge royal palm trees all over the place. Flamingos greet you at the entrance to the lobby.
  • Lobby- GORGEOUS. All marble with a huge flowing water fountain containing fish. Good service at the lobby bar, comfy chairs, and good entertainment here in the evenings.
  • Food- For those picky eaters, you are in luck! There is no way that you could possible be dissatisfied with the food here or starve unless you hate every kind of food…cause that’s what they have! We did not get sick at all. The main buffet (le cathedral) was so good that we didn’t even go to all of our a la carte restaurants! There is so much variety and each night has a theme. All the food is prepared well and is very fresh. There is a great Italian section (Italian Corner) that prepares different pastas and pizzas every night regardless of the theme. The a la Cartes were also very good. The Sports Bar has nachos, ice cream, hot dogs, fresh pizza, hamburgers, and a salad bar as well. This was great in the middle of the day or in the evening for a snack. The internet centre is located in here as well.
  • Pools- the main one at the Palladium is nice. Get a hut early in the morning as these fill up fast. There is a swim up pool bar and the speediness of service varies depending on how busy the pool is. Some days were good, other days we had to wait a long time for a bartender to notice us. The pool at the palace section which is free to access is three times larger and has a nice cold Jacuzzi that fits like
    30 people!
  • Beach- FABULOUS! this beach has been rated within the top ten beaches in the world and I can see why. The beach is lined with tall royal palm trees. The water is gorgeous, crystal clear and very warm. Topless tanning is very popular! I would say 50% of the women go topless. For two maritimers who were not used to this, it was kind of overwhelming at first (although my boyfriend was all smiles!)… but I soon ended up deciding to ‘go with the crowd’ and join in! We walked the beach both directions and this section on the beach is one of the nicest sections that we saw.
  • Excursions and Adventures- We went on the Saona Island Tour. This was 80 dollars and was well worth the money. I had been on a catamaran trip in Vardero Cuba and loved it, and this was even better! You leave at 7:30 am and return around 7 p.m. It includes speed boating, swimming in ‘natural pools’ in the middle of the ocean, tanning on a secluded beach and getting a great meal, then sailing back on a huge catamaran with lots of drinking and dancing…..what more could you want?! We also went parasailing. This was 80 dollars to go up together and although it was very fun, this was very pricey for a ten minute ride.
  • Spa-and Fitness Centre- the spa is part of the resort but not included as all inclusive. People will approach you on the beach or by the pool to offer you deals on massages. I highly recommend getting a massage on the beach!….soooooooo relaxing! My boyfriend enjoyed the fitness centre. Its air conditioned and has nice equipment.
  • Entertainment- The theatre is very large and very nice. Service is good. The talented dancers provide good shows although we found that it got boring night after night. Hanging out in the lobby in the evenings was a nice alternative and it always had a live band playing. The disco is fun. Its air conditioned and has a nice layout.
  • Overall- I have been to Cuba five times, Jamaica, and Mexico. I liked this the best. This five star resort deserves all five stars. We had an excellent vacation.

Dominican Travel Tips

  1. Bring mini hand sanitizers. We kept these in our beach bag, and used them even after we washed our hands leaving the bathrooms, and in the restaurants. Perhaps this helped us since we did not get sick. The water is not safe to drink so if you wash your hands with it….and then have you hands anywhere
near your mouth you are bound to get sick. Remember to never run your tooth brush under the faucet! Carry the sanitizer with you as an extra precaution….its not worth losing days of your vacation cooped up in your hotel room sick. NOTE- there is plenty of water available to drink that comes bottled.
  2. Bring bug repellent. We forgot this and we got bitten a lot at night! We were taking the anti malarial meds so hopefully we avoided getting anything, but the bites are extremely itchy and these buggers love your legs and ankles! Take the train around to get used to where everything is! this is a huge resort and its easy to miss things that you could be enjoying.
  3. Bring all the meds, sun block, tampons, and other necessities you might need with you. The hotel’s retail store prices are insane! – like 8 dollars American for a lip balm with spf, 10 dollars American for bug repellent, 5 dollars American for Pringles! ha-ha
  4. Practice a little spanish before you go. I downloaded some common Spanish phrases off some travel websites, and practiced these on the plane. These helped out especially in the restaurant and bars when asking for certain drinks or directions. The staff appreciate when you try to speak their language and will help you. Be able to laugh at yourself cause you will sometimes sound silly since you
don’t have the right accent. Its fun to learn a few phrases to be able to communicate with the workers in a friendly manner. The amount of English that the workers know varies so knowing a bit of
    Spanish will be beneficial.
  5. Enjoy yourself and have a open mind. This is a third world country so appreciate the service and
amenities with that in mind and you will have an excellent vacation 🙂

The Havana Club Bar Varadero Cuba

September 9th, 2005  |  Published in travel  |  1 Comment

The “Havana Club” bar, or “club nocturno” as is seen on their sign, is one of the hottest nightclubs in Varadero Cuba. The “Havana Club” is a attraction in the heart of Varadero Cuba that is off of the resorts, but within walking distance from most of the major ones. It is a Local bar full of young people, and is bumping every night of the week. I recommend going to the Havana Club local bar as many nights as you can while on vacation in Varadero Cuba. It is by far the biggest party club in Varadero Cuba. So, if you’re looking for a serious party, Havana Club Varadero is definitely the place to be. When vacationing in Varadero Cuba, you should definitely consider adding this attraction to your roster! It is no more than $5 USD from a majority of all of the big resorts on the strip.
The Havana Club has a $10 USD cover charge to get in, but once you are in, you don’t pay for anything including all of your drinks! A couple of typical refrigerator-shaped bouncers give you a bracelet at the door, and you just go up to the bar and order whatever you want – no charge. Make sure to bring some dollars to tip the toilet attendant! But ladies – bring your own toilet paper or you’ll have to drip dry! When you head out to the Havana Club, dress as you would for any nightclub at home. Cubans tend to dress up when they go out, although you see some tourists in jeans and T-shirts. You want to look nice when you go out in Cuba, but it will get hot so dress so that you are cool. You may hear in reviews that this is a “strictly tourists” disco. This is wrong, as my girlfriend and I went there with a Cuban guy we were hanging out with all day. I know this from experience. This club is a true Cuban attraction.
You will find this located on a main street called “Av. de Las Amricas y Calle K – Reparto La Torre” in Varadero behind the Palma Real hotel. The Havana Club is a small disco playing modern music. You’ll hear American Hip-Hop, the usual North-America clubbin’ music. The music was a good variety, and they play a good mix. You’ll definitely recognize most of the music there, which is what makes this place so fun. Ladies, there are also loads of single Cuban males hitting on the single female holiday-makers here, but don’t let it put you off. Sorry guys, for some reason, you just don’t see many Cuban females out in the clubs. I am not sure exactly why this is.
If you are staying on the strip in Varadero, it’s fairly easy to get to the Havana Club. You’ll probably be on an all-inclusive resort in Varadero, so you will be really close to the Havana Club.Just say “Havana Club” to the Taxi drivers and they’ll get you there. You can also walk, if you don’t mind walking for about 20 minutes. If you decide to do this, I recommend getting a good snap on first, and taking a “road rocket” to tide you over. It will make the walk a whole lot more fun. Another way to get there, if you have a designated driver, is that you can rent a moped. We had rented one for the whole day, so we decided to take a spin in to the club for a bit. That was very fun. It’s safe to park it outside, since there is very little crime.
The Havana Club Varadero is frequented by locals seeking to mix and mingle, but given its proximity to the beautiful Varadero beach, it is also popular with tourists staying at the barrage of all inclusive hotels. Be prepared for anything here, as you never know what’s going to wash in the door. The bar serves up some delicious mixed drinks, and its no surprise that Havana Club Rum, made locally in Cuba, is the liquor of choice. Some travelers will say; the fun team will try to convince you to go to this bar as the rule is that if they take six guests, they are able to get in for free. They really enjoy the club because they mingle with the tourists, drink free, and hear non-Cuban hip hop etc. (But our Cuban buddy got in free with just the two of us.)

Coralia Club Playa De Oro Cuba

Coralia Club Playa De Oro Pictures, Reviews, Travel Tips. Playa de Oro all inclusive resort. We stayed in Varadero, and the vacation was perfect! Click the links below for the Resort Photos, and Coralia Club Playa De Oro reviews from each day. We saw some digital signage equipment while we played billiards Enjoy!

Coralia Club Playa De Oro Resort Review and Varadero Travel Tips. Update – This place was not as good as the place we went to in 2007 – Gran Bahia Principe Wedding.

Intro and Flight:

My boyfriend and I just returned from a wonderful week at the Coralia Club Playa De Oro resort in Varadero. This was our fourth time to Cuba and we’ve always stayed at 4 star hotels…Coralia Club Playa De Oro is one of the best I’ve stayed at. Also, because I’ve been to Cuba so many times it’s easy to see in some reviews that what one gives as a complaint about the resort, is actually really just a general norm for the country itself. We left Halifax February 21 (instead of February 19 due to blizzard delay!), and even though the vacation was shorter than normal, we had a great time. One tip, anyone checking for delays or flight schedules flying with Air Transat Holidays should call the 1-877 number instead of checking the website, which isn’t updated as regularly as it should be! Long story short, we got off the ground, and were on the way! Varadero Ho! Speaking of Varadero and night clubs, you’ll probably want to check out the Varadero Dance Club Pirates Cave. Only 5 minutes away.

Coralia Club Playa de Oro – Varadero

We had six full days of sunshine. Do not get scared if it rains. This is normal and it only lasts about an hour and when it rains it pours! Luckily the rainstorm we had was in the evening. Here are some useful points to keep in mind:

Coralia Club Playa De Oro – Varadero Cuba.

  1. If you arrive at the Coralia Club Playa De Oro resort very early in the morning (like we did at 5 a.m.)
don’t be upset or afraid that they put you in a a room that is not ready. They will switch you to a newer room around 9:30 as soon as the maids come into town. This happened to us and we were put in a room that was designed for staff…really gross and nasty, and I was upset thinking this is what all the rooms looked like. We got transferred quickly like the front desk had promised and we had a gorgeous room and balcony. Now remember: this is a communist country, so don’t expect the Hilton hotel, but the rooms are kept very clean and the beds are comfortable. When you get there, resist the urget to spend time unpacking, and just head outside! You’ll want to be inside later in the day, afer you have had too much heat! Unpack then.
  2. Food: the food in Cuba is very bland. Honestly though, this resort had the best food I’ve ever had in Cuba. With no trading with the US they try their best to prepare foods that we like. Here is what we were told was the travel tip of all Varadero travel tips – If you are very picky, I suggest taking little salt and pepper packets or your own spice. This is what I did but actually didn’t even use them b/c I found the resort’s food to be very good. People that get sick have to be aware that their choices may play a big part in their chance of stomach problems. The food here is very good and very fresh. If you make smart choices just like you would at home, then you won’t have any troubles! (of course bring Immodium in case). Do not eat things like mayonaise that is sitting in the sun. Go easy on dishes that contain lots of meat. The bread is amazing! Cheese is good. Lots of HOT cooked fish, meat and vegetables. Go to the buffet when it opens, that is when the food is the freshest and hottest. Avoid
the deli meats that sit out for a long time, or fish dishes that are cold and sit at the salad bar…these are breeding grounds for bacteria in the heat. The food preparation is beautiful. Deserts taste very
similar to each other. Omlettes are great in the morning! Be creative: make toasted sandwiches, add onions, green peppers, etc to pasta if you want more flavor. The outside grill opens everyday for lunch…go there everyday! They have fresh bbq’d chicken, pork, ribs etc, lots of good rice that has flavor. You will not starve at all. Don’t expect Canadian food, but you will be pleased if you have an open mind! Lots of fresh fruit. International a la carte is very good…get the chicken!
  3. Drinks: okay ladies, go easy on the pina coladas! anything made with milk products is another thing you have to be careful with. These drinks are good but limit them to maybe two a day. I did this and I
felt great all week. The coke is not coca-cola its their own version called “tukola”. Its sweeter and some may find it doesn’t have the best carbonatio
  4. Service: Front desk aren’t always that friendly but I think its more of a language barrier problem that rudeness. This resort is French owned and I found that the staff were very friendly to the French but only because they simply had more staff that spoke better French than English. If you are polite and say please and thank-you, they are very
  5. polite back. The bartenders get tips but don’t feel obligated to do so. I didn’t find the service improved for those who did, so if you don’t want to, don’t feel that you have to. The entertainment staff are very friendly, talk to them and they will make friends with you. Maid service: they take good care of your rooms so treat them well. I left things from the dollar store like crayons, barbies, etc for their children since they always gets soaps, and shampoos from most other guests.
  6. Rent the mopeds! Best thing we did. They’re easy to drive and we took them all over Varadero and even checked out the new hotels being built at the tip of the peninsula. 25 dollars for 24 hours, is a good deal!
  7. Catamaran tour is a guaranteed good time!
  8. Jeep Safari Tour is also very good and worth the money! You will see a lot of the real Cuban countryside and see how locals live. You will visit local villages and see how Cubans really live.
  9. The Pirate’s Cave bar Varadero is down the road. Go there! Its a 2 dollar cab ride or 10 min walk. Its bar with a live dance show and then turns into a nightclub all inside a real cave! (you can view pictures of the pirates cave bar)
  10. Havana Club also another good nightclub off the resort (by the Palma Real hotel). Just tell the cabbie and he’ll take you there.
  11. The disco at the hotel is nice inside but isn’t very busy. So go off the resort if you want more nightlife. Cabs park right outside the lobby and will take you to the bars. 10 dollars cover for admission and unlimited drinks. Havana Club is a great one with a mix of American and Cuban Music.
  12. The night time synchronized swimming show at the hotel is a must see! I was extremely impressed and entertained.
  13. Put your towel out early at the beach. By 10 a.m. there are no more lounge chairs.
  14. Beach is gorgeous. Go on the pedal boats, catamarans, banana boat.
  15. Bring toilet paper if you leave the resort!!!!! anywhere you go you have to pay a dollar for two squares. I’m not kidding! even at the airport! So just bring a roll or buy kleenex packs and you’ll be fine.
  16. Go to the meeting that your rep has scheduled the day you arrive. You’ll get a time on the bus ride from the airport to meet him/her in the lobby. They will answer questions about the hotel (things to do, locations of things, how to get around, information and prices on tours). I always go to this, and it makes your stay so much better. You don’t end up wasting days wondering about certain things.
  17. 25 dollars departure tax to get out of country. Make sure you have a 20 and a 5, because they do not make change at the airport. They will just take whatever is left over!
  18. Enjoy your stay! the weather is unpredictable but generally very good. You will have a wonderful vacation if you keep these tips in mind!
