Cueva de Pirata, Hicacos Penninsula, Cuba

November 8th, 2007  |  Published in travel  |  2 Comments

The cave is and at 200 ms. of one of the most attended Night Club “Cueva del Pirata” (Pirate’s Cave). being used as a caberet bar.

Let me start off by saying you HAVE to go to the “pirates Cave” nightclub! 8 pesos to get in BUT you get free drinks ALL night along, very fun atmosphere, they have a show first then the dancing begins non stop all night long! great for Toronto party people (like us)!!! and its ACUTALLY a real cave that you party in!!!! Amazing!!!!!!!

We went to Cueva del Pirata (Pirate’s Cave) nightclub twice — once on Monday night and because we liked it so much we returned on Friday night. They have a show at 11PM which is definitely worth it — colourful costumes, good music and fantastic dancers — WOW can they move!! After the show everyone is up on their feet dancing to both Cuban tunes and stuff we listen to here. $10 bucks for cover charge and drinks all night long — but beware, their drinks are much stronger than ours here. We spent Tuesday lying in the shade trying to shake off our hangovers. Definitely check this place out. (you can view pictures of the pirates cave bar)

Cuevos Las Pirates (the Pirates Cave), played a mix of music. Smaller than Club International – wasn’t very busy on Wednesday night.

The Pirates Cave (Cuevos las Pirates) and Mambo Club. Pirates Cave was awesome, its a huge cave with a bar and dance floor, cover was $8 and was all inclusive. Hint: tip the waiter and he’ll be your best friend, he would bring me drinks on the dance floor. They put on a show every-night before the club music came on, the show had dancers, live band and a magician.

We went on this during our coralia club Cuba trip.

Caribbean Travel Tips

September 10th, 2007  |  Published in travel  |  15 Comments

Here is a quick post with about 50 or so Caribbean travel tips for the first-time Caribbean traveler. They are mostly common sense items, and are geared toward the all-inclusive destination travelers.

Booking The Vacation

  1. Make sure you book the room that you actually want If you are two singles traveling together, make sure you ask for two separate beds. If you are a couple, ask for a king size bed. (Yes, if you have a good travel agent, they should be able to accommodate you, and help you with this.)
  2. If you are a couple, and you are on your honeymoon or anniversary, you should definitely inquire at the front desk about a free upgrade when you check-in. Please remember that the resort receives emails about room requests all the time. Be understanding as this is only a request. (Note that it is much better to ask in person at the front desk, than to send an email about it.)
  3. Make sure you book at a time for your arrival that is convenient for you. If you have to check into your rooms after three in the afternoon and you have booked a morning flight that you arrive earlier, be prepared for that your room may not be ready. If you are arriving in the evening, it should be no problem. Understanding that rooms become available in the afternoon means that you understand people check out for their flights that day, and that rooms must be cleaned by the maid before you can check into yours. Check with your hotel for available check in times.
  4. Keep in mind that if you are taking an evening flight home, you will have to check out of your room around noon and will have to store your suitcases in a locked room for the day. This can be a pain as you cannot access showers or all your things to get ready after a day in the sun. Using communal washrooms all day and not having your hotel room available to rest in might be a problem for some people. That being said, some hotels will allow you to pay money to keep your room and offer a late check out. This will be subject to availability. If people are arriving that day and need to check into their room which was yours for the week they might not allow you to do this.

Packing

  1. Get your clothes together, then divide it in half and put that in your suitcase. It is so easy to over pack and you will always be surprised at how many clothes you did not wear.
  2. Anything like mouse for your hair, shampoo, creams etc that may explode in your suitcase on the plane should be packed in plastic bags or alternatively put in your carry on.

Flight

  1. Arrive three hours ahead of time (I know it sounds like a lot, but on flights where there is no pre-assigned seat, it helps as you can pick your seat and the closer to the exit on the plane means closer to the exit when you get off, closer to customs, and closer to get on the bus when you are going to your hotel).
  2. If you have food restrictions, inquire ahead of time.
  3. Please be thoughtful of the person behind you- that is, when you are eating, raise your seat back up from the reclined position so that your neighbor has room to eat as well.
  4. The movies are not always good. If you have a portable DVD player, ipod, or a PSP; bring it.

Hotel Arrival and Check-In

  1. Try to understand that check in may take some time and that depending on the time of arrival rooms may not be ready. Since check-out and maid service must happen before you can check into your room, this is sometimes the case.
  2. Ask for a map if you have to check in late and can’t find your room.
  3. Check the card that your receive on the bus or at the hotel at check in regarding orientation to the hotel. This is a VERY important meeting that talks about the hotel and things you should know (where certain restaurants are, where to get beach towels, what excursions suit you and when to book, etc.)

Things to Keep in Mind at Your Resort

  1. Remember that a rating of 3, 4, or 5 stars in your home country is not equivalent to a rating of 3, 4, or 5 stars at home. Cuba and the Dominican Republic are not equivalent to Mexico, or the Bahamas; which is why they are usually a lot cheaper. We see so many trip reports of people dissapointed with their resort. Set your expectations accordingly. If you got a great deal, enjoy it for what it is worth. You are on vacation.
  2. Make sure you check out all activities that your hotel has to offer. There may be day-time activities such as aqua fitness, dance lessons, and beach volleyball that you will be interested in.
  3. If you want a particular place at the beach or the pool, be prepared to get up early and reserve a spot. Also, please be courteous and do not leave your towel at the pool all day saving your spot if you plan on spending most of the day elsewhere. Reserve spots only if you are going to use them.
  4. Bring insulated travel mugs for drinks! You will understand this on once you get down there, especially if you hate drinking your alcohol from tiny plastic cups.

Hotel Reminders

  1. Book your al la carte restraunt meals (specialty restaurants) early! The best ones will fill up fast. If you can, talk to someone who has been to each of them before so that you can get advice and plan early.
  2. Paying a deposit on the beach towel service is normal. Think about how much towels cost at home, and how you leave them everywhere and unattended wherever you go. You get your money back at the end of the week! J
  3. Try to make an effort to speak a few words in the native language down there. They appreciate it!!
  4. Make sure that you buy all sun block, meds, and necessities in your own country and that you have all that you will need. The hotels will charge 4 or 5 times more than what you are used to paying! This includes junk food too!
  5. Leaving tips for the maids or bartenders is nice. You can also leave things for their children that are hard to access down there like coloring books, crayons, pencils, calculators from the dollar store. Medication is hard to access for locals as well. Tylenol and baby Tylenol are also appreciated. (Be sure to communicate proper use to those you give them to. Ensure that you are only dispensing OTC medication!) Don’t forget the gardeners or security staff as well. They work long hard hours in the sun and rarely get to interact with guests or receive tips. Giving them a glass of water or juice is very much appreciated by them. I gave a man who was working outside my room some things for his family, and he started to cry he was so happy. Next thing I know he brought me fresh cut flowers and made a hat out of a palm tree leaves to say thank you.
  6. If your room is on a ground floor room, do not leave glasses that had sugary drinks in them around the room. They WILL attract ants and other bugs…. I speak from experience. Waking up to find all kinds of ants in my bed and all over the floor is not fun! Those little buggers went back and told all the other ant friends and even after getting the maid to spray, I think they still wanted in all week- and some managed to keep coming!
  7. The maids will leave fresh towels if yours are left in the tub or are obviously wet and dirty. If you leave towels around the room that are used but not dirty, they will probably not change them every day. Same thing goes for the bed sheets. If you do not change your bed sheets everyday at home, why do you expect your sheets to be changed everyday on vacation? You’re not that dirty are you? The maids will make your bed everyday but they will not change your sheets unless they really need to be changed. Be understanding about this.

Excursions, Activities, and things to do off the resort

  1. Browse some travel magazines for site and excursion recommendations.
  2. Do try to go on a few excursions off your resort. You will have so much fun and will really get to see much more of the culture of the country. Catamarans are very fun, as are jeep tours. Both are worth the money.
  3. Visiting the local markets is a must. Barter them down in price a bit. Also, you can sometimes trade a few of your own belongings for things you want at the market. This can be fun.
  4. Rent a moped if you get a chance. You can tour all over on your own and its very cheap on gas. These things go forever!
  5. Para sailing is also very fun. It is expensive though for a 15 minute ride. If you can go up attached with another person, this is a really great experience.
  6. Deep Sea Fishing- well all I have heard about it is that you may catch some fish, you may not, but a sure bet is that you will be VERY seasick. Most people end up puking over the side of the boat. So book this tour with caution. You have been warned!
  7. Going to local bars and discos is a great way to meet other people, and see how the locals dance and interact with each other. If you get the chance, I highly recommend it. In Varadero, the good ones are Havana Club, Pirates Cave, and Mambo Club. In Punta Cana, there is one called Mangu. In Guardalavaca, there are some local ones within walking distance from the resorts. Some are right on the beach, and another one is a huge dance bar that all the locals frequent regularly.

The Food, ahhh Yes, The Food

  1. Mayonnaise, sliced meats, cold fish, or eggs left out for hours at a buffet are not good choices. These harbor breeding grounds for bacteria.
  2. Make sure that your omelette is cooked well and not runny in the centre. Uncooked eggs can carry salmonella bacteria and make you very sick.
  3. Always take a clean plate to the buffet with you.
  4. Drinks made with milk (i.e. pina coladas) should not be consumed in high quantities. Drink these as treats and not as your only drink of choice. The milk acts as a diuretic and can also cause a lot of diarrhea.
  5. Avoid eating dishes that look foreign to you. They will probably seem foreign to your stomach as well. 🙂
  6. Make sure that all meat is cooked well. With the amount of people these large resorts must feed and the pressure to turn out food, it is possible that some dishes may have meat that is undercooked.
  7. Wash hands, wash hands, wash hands: frequently! Wash after the washroom especially and bring hand sanitizer with you everywhere! I use the sanitizer after visiting the buffet before and after I eat. You cannot trust that everyone who touched the serving utensils at the buffet washed their hands after the bathroom, or is not sick. Also, I bring it with me on excursions and for in the airport. I wash my hands in the washroom, and then use the sanitizer as well to be sure.
  8. If you are visiting a country where only bottled water is allowed, then make sure you brush your teeth with bottled water and use sanitizer after washing your hands in the washroom. When in the shower, keep your mouth closed at all times and try not to get water around your mouth or in your eyes.
  9. Bring Immodium extra strength with you to stop diarrhea. If you are one that gets very constipated on trips, bring some gentle laxatives such as natural Sennakot, or Dulcolex.
  10. When it comes to Caribbean food, Punta Cana pretty much takes the cake, having the best cuisine when compared with other Caribbean destinations. For more information about Caribbean food, including restaurant reviews in Punta Cana, and Caribbean recipes, be sure to check out the Punta Cana Information Guide.

Odds and Ends

  1. Sun block! Everyone wants a nice tan and wearing sun block with a high spf (at least 30) will still allow you to get a great one – you just won’t burn. A bad sunburn is very uncomfortable down there and will ruin your vacation.
  2. Remember that nightly entertainment is not a Vegas show. These people work long days and then have to perform at night. Its free entertainment, so have a few drinks, kick back and enjoy it.
  3. The lobby at night is a nice place to hang out and meet people in the evenings.
  4. Take the dance lessons they offer. Don’t be afraid about having two left feet or looking silly. That’s what its there for. You may surprise yourself that you have a little Caribbean rhythm after all! Meringue is very easy, salsa a little more difficult but still easy to learn. Have fun with them.
  5. Aqua fitness for an hour and then swimming over to the swim up bar to down three cubre libres kind of defeats the purpose of the work out ha-ha.
  6. Make sure that if you have to pay any departure taxes when you leave, that you set this money aside with your passport so that you do not accidentally spend it. I saw many people unable to get to a bank and having to beg other tourists for cash. – Not fun and very stressful!
  7. Do not buy cigars in Cuba that are not sealed or do not have a gold seal of authenticity sticker of approval. If there is no sticker and they are not sealed, then these are from the black market and are illegal. Customs will take these away from you. Spend the extra money and you’ll be fine- you can keep them and you know what you are buying are real.
  8. Be careful buying anything in the markets made of wood. Customs will ask you about this when returning as wooden things can have little bugs or mites in them and cannot enter your country. Unfortunately, many times they will confiscate it even though your items are totally fine. Just keep it in mind if you buy something expensive or try to find a way to get it home safely in your suitcase without losing it.
  9. If you buy a picture or a painting, it’s totally fine to roll it up and put it in your suitcase. Just put it on top or in between soft things. It will be in good condition to frame when you get home.
  10. And finally…some advice for the men: Try not to be obvious when checking out the topless women on the beach. Your wife/girlfriend does not appreciate your gawking. Be conspicuous-it will pay off later for you in the evening. (Sunglasses help! – Gary)
  11. Try to relax, and realize that you are on vacation. Yes there will be little mishaps or things that you didn’t expect to happen, but hey… its better than being at work. Enjoy yourself and realize that you are luckier than any of the locals who are working at your resort or many of your co-workers you left at your job the past week Happy Travels!

Snitz Forum SEO

September 10th, 2007  |  Published in SEO  |  3 Comments

Snitz Forum SEO. I have done extensive work to my installation of snitz forums to improve the ranking of the forum pages in the search engines. I figured that since relatively little work has been done in this area, I’d take everyone through a very high level of what I’ve done. You’ll need a significant level of knowledge of the code base, since there is not one single plugin.

Snitz Forum SEO

I’ve recently been working on integrating the new version of snitz (not yet live on my site) and I’ve focused on optimizing it for better placement of it’s pages in the search engines. I’ve decided to write a post about some of the things I’ve modified. I know that SEO is a very subjective topic, and some of the methods I’ve used may or may not have an effect. Snitz forum is done in Classic ASP 3.0 (Classic Active Server Pages) and has a twin .net version in beta. All of these Snitz 2000 forum seo tips are custom coded, and were implemented on the Classic ASP version of Snitz.

I’ve done the modifications on the following assumptions:

To fully optimize your Snitz forum SEO work, all pages should have H1, Meta Tags, Title Tags, and H2 that match (relatively close) and that are specific to the content on that page. Duplicate content, both from other sites, and within your own site, is looked negatively upon by search engines So based on these assumptions, and on the assumptions of some other aspects of SEO, Ive made the following edits, additions, or adjustments to the new version of my forum.

  1. Any additional pages I’ve added with any mod I’ve installed, I’ve added the custom Title and Meta tag to. This is done at around line 1500 in inc_func_common.asp by just adding another “case” to the select case function.
  2. If you have full server access (usually you don’t on shared hosting) you should use the ISAPI dll to have your server create search engine friendly URLs. (masks the normal query string url with a url that is based on your page’s title.)
  3. Since you probably don’t have access on your server to use ISAPI DLL, you can some simple coding, but you’d have to have post_info.asp write a page for every topic, which would result in thousands of files on your host. Add a “url” field to the database tables for “xxxx_topics” Then, in post_info.asp, have it use objFSO.createfile (id use copyfile command on a template) and have it write a page matching the title, and replace(title,” “,”-“) as the filename of the new page. Then, anytime a page is referenced anywhere, you’ll need to call a function that takes the id of the post, looks up the corresponding URL (from the column you added to the table), and inserts it.
  4. If you don’t have the coding skills or the capacity on your fileserver to do this, just make sure that your dynamic URLs are as clean as possible and that they are in order (the same order) everywhere you find them. Make the unique parameter the FIRST one in the querystring so that the crawler reads it first. For example, on the default snitz installation, member profiles have the ID parameter as the second parameter in the querystring. (where “mode” is the first) You have to get ID moved before mode in all instances of the link.
  5. BOTH Google sitemaps and a regular forum sitemap are a MUST. You can set up your post_info.asp to write a new Google sitemap file every time a new post is submitted. You can also set up an automatic ping to Google webmaster tools to let them know that your sitemap has been update with new content. In addition to the Google sitemap, you should have a forum sitemap, which is a regular page that lists all of your forum pages. I have one for all of my forum pages OTHER than forum.asp, and topic.asp, then I have a separate sitemap, linked to the main forum sitemap for EACH forum. In each of these, I list links to every topic, AND every topic page if greater than 1. This ensures that engine crawlers get a good deep crawl view. NOTE: for engines to do a deep crawl, you will ALREADY need to have a decent number of external sites linking to you. This tells the engines that your site must be fairly popular, and that they should deep crawl, since the pages should be of good quality for their indexes. NOTE: below there is an item about duplicate content. Read that, and apply its principles to this item as well.
  6. Duplicate content. You want to make sure that your engine results aren’t diluted with duplicate content. You basically want all of your “power” focused on forum index pages, and the actual topic pages themselves. Based on that, you need to make EXTENSIVE use of the rel=”nofollow” tag for all links to duplicate content. Beside duplicate content, you can use nofollow to ask the crawler not to waste time on non-content links. This will allow it to focus what energy it decides to spend on your site, on the most important pages which as I stated earlier, are default.asp, forum.asp, and topic.asp. I can’t remember EVERY one that I did, but here is the main list that you need to nofollow to:
    • active.asp (if you’ve added that mod)
    • unanswered.asp (if you’ve added that mod)
    • printer friendly versions
    • Category collapse/expand links on default.asp, as well as links to view just one category. (the content is the same as in default.asp, and it is useless to send the crawlers there)
    • ALL links to post.asp (to post new topic or a reply.) This is because if it is a reply, post.asp lists the original topic and all replies so far, and Ive noticed that Yahoo especially, likes to index THIS instead of the main topic. This may be because of the sheer number of links on the topic page to reply. Adding nofollow should prevent this.
    • nofollow all subscription links, all registration links, and any link that is javascript, or to a page that wouldn’t be useful to have in the search engines for your site’s niche.
    • login.asp
    • the forgot password page
    • IF your member profiles are not viewable to guests, use nofollow on those too. If you don’t the engines will crawl them, and see a “you must be logged in to view” page for EVERY member. This is not good.
    • This is also a must. If a page, such as default.asp has multiple links to the same page, nofollow all but one. default.asp example is for each forum, there is the text link to the forum, PLUS, the link on the folder image to the left. I use nofollow on the folder link. This will give the text link more power or juice, or “relevance” which is a good thing. You’ll have to scour your forum for these situations. There are quite a few, but I can’t remember them all off the top of my head.
    • …you get the picture now. Use nofollow on any and all links that wouldn’t be useful in the search engines, and that you don’t want your crawler wasting time on.
  7. This will be more of a personal preference, and a preference of your users. You can make your member profiles public, and have them index-able for search. I don’t publish any contact info on the profile when being viewed publicly. You can just use an if statement where if not mlev = greater than 1, don’t show … If you decide to do this, there are a few things that you can do to SEO the member profiles. They need H1 and H2 tags that are unique, so add the member name to it. You can also do this in inc_func_common.asp by editing the pop_profile.asp case.
  8. On topic.asp, I use h1, h2, and h3 tags all with the title of the topic as the text. I use h1 at the top, h2 goes under all of the usual header stuff, and h3 goes under the topic and replies. This ensures that the crawler gets the idea of what your page is about. Also, you should consider making it a rule that your users post meaningful topic titles, and reserve the right to adjust them. This seems invasive, but in the long run, it helps users. With relevant titles, more users find the topic.
  9. If you have a home page that is different from your forum’s default.asp page, use a syndication mod. You’ll see that on my forum, my actual forum is located in the “/forum” sub folder, and i have a separate homepage. I use a syndication mod (which I’ve posted in the “MODs with code” forum at snits) to ensure that my newest topics are viewable by more users, AND so that they get crawled quickly by search engines.
  10. Use the RSS mod, and offer other sites to syndicate your content. This can provide invaluable back link power, and can give you credibility in your niche’s community. It also helps bring you more traffic.
  11. Use title tags in your links. for example, any link going to your default.asp page, use title=”forum-title-here” in the a tag. This also helps engine crawlers get the idea of what that page is about. [Note, this technique’s usefulness is debated, but I always use the rule; it can’t hurt to have it there.]
  12. On topic.asp, I’ve also integrated the “bold” or “italic” text power technique. Basically, you can bold or italicize a piece of text that matches your page’s title in order to stress to the engines what the page is about. All things being equal, you’d get preference in the engines if you did this, over a competitor that didn’t. I did it in the header as follows: This billiards forum topic is titled “last pocket 8 ball.” You can send to a friend , or create a printer friendly version. The page’s title is in bold, thus stressing the subject of the page’s content, and i’ve done it in a sentence that doesn’t look strange to real users, since there are useful links to the printer friendly version page, and the send to friend page.
  13. You must add the GOOGIESPELL mod to all posting or reply text areas, and encourage your users to make use of it. Also make it a rule that if there are misspellings and poorly composed topics and replies, that moderators have the right to correct them, or ban multiple offenders. Search engines consider your site or page less credible if there are spelling and grammar mistakes throughout the content. Ensuring that everything is correct can make a huge difference.
  14. Never allow your users to post content from other sites, unless they are quoting small portions of text. Engines will see your site as “duplicate” and will give preference to the site which had that particular content first.
  15. Ensure that your categories and forums are organized in to logical sub-divisions of your forum’s main topic. Use siloing (visit Bruce Clay’s SEO site for more info on this) to show engines how to treat your content.
  16. Add code to your inc_common.asp file to insert the page number into the title and meta tags for topics that have pagination due to many replies. Otherwise, the separate pages will all have the same title and meta tags, which is typically a no-no.  See below for the code snippet.

Snitz Forum SEO

That is all that I can think of at the moment, but I know there was more that I’ve done. If anyone has done other things to improve their Snitz forum SEO, please drop me a message.

Pirates Cave Night Club Varadero

November 8th, 2006  |  Published in travel  |  1 Comment

It’s not far from the Coralia Club Resort in Varadero.

Pirates Cave Club – a real cave made into a night club. Did a show that has to be seen to be believed. Seriously, must go back and take pictures.

La Cueva Del Pirata: Pirate cave cabaret Written by Delusio on March 21, 2004. (you can view pictures of the pirates cave bar)

This place is located in a cave, entrance is $10, open bar included. The show starts at 10 p.m. after that it becomes a disco, open until 3 a.m. Dancers & singers, it’s probably not the Tropicana, but worth visiting.

No dress code, this is not a posh place.
Nightclub Directions: Near Melia Varadero Hotel, you’ll need a cab, probably.
Theme: This is a cave which has been redesigned to a club… well, there first is a cabaret show and the waiters are dressed in Pirate’s costumes and afterwards there’s a DJ playing and you can dance on stage.

We went to Cueva De Pirata on the Thursday night. I was told this is a fairly new club but it is open to locals. Same deal with the entrance, $10 US and all you could drink. This club was a lot smaller than La Rumba. It was very different though. Translated “Cueva de Pirata” means “Pirate Cave” and the place looked like it. The music was really good. Lots of Hip Hop and R&B mixed in with house, techno, salsa, merengue, etc. Not very packed that night we went though but a good looking crowd nonetheless. Cost of the cab was only $2 US. We went with some locals who worked at the hotel and the recommended that we avoid eye contact with the locals.

Groomsman Jokes

July 10th, 2006  |  Published in wedding

At the wedding reception, our good friend and emcee, Simon Yu, had a few groomsman jokes that he didn’t have a chance to tell. Of course, some may not have been exactly appropriate with my little old nanny in the audience…

Groomsman Jokes

Top 9 Signs Gary is Whipped

  • He now remembers most of his weekend, as opposed to forgetting the whole thing.
  • While watching a movie with the guys, you ask Gary to pass you a beer. He replies “Yes, Dear”
  • When using a public washroom, Gary automatically remembers to put down the toilet seat.
  • He says things like: “I do more folding of laundry than drink on that bar these days.”
  • He has had to move the bar stools to make room for the ironing board.
  • When he can’t stop touting the benefits of aromatherapy.
  • If you call him early in the week to ask whats going on for the weekend, you hear “hang on, i’ll check” while he asks Jenn what she has planned.
  • He ordered a glass of wine the last time we went to the bar, instead of the usual four double rum-and-cokes.
  • You overhear Gary asking Jenn if he should wear that blue shirt, or switch to the black one.

You know you actually married Gary when…

  • You have to keep the fridge stocked at all time with cheese, onion, and mayo.
  • You have to keep reminding him that he does not belong in the kitty litter.
  • He says “no hun, there is no time to actually cook the hot dogs, I’ll just eat them raw.”
  • You spend your weekends watching re-runs of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
  • You get nervous when Gary starts giving you advice on driving.
